2012 R2 Drivers for NC542M 10GB Mezz Adapters

$

Hi,

We have a bunch of NC542M 10GB cards in BL460C G6 servers that have been operating fine for over a year on Server 2012 R2 Operating systems then last week after a reboot the servers would BSOD and wouldn't boot into Windows.

I tracked down the driver responsible being the NC542M 10GB drivers (we were using the OEM Mellanox drivers mlx4_bus.sys). Once I removed the drivers the servers can now boot.

Problem is now the cards are useless as it looks like HP haven't released any 2012 R2 drivers for them (and the HP 2008 R2 driver package says that the driver package is not compatible with the 2012 R2 OS so will not install).
Servers are out of warranty/support.

Any workarounds / suggestions or are these cards now worthless and I need to spend thousands on replacements for the same functionality?

Cheers,

Hi,

we are unable to boot from SAN X with RHEL 6.6 on blade servers

HP BL460c Gen9 + HP 630FLB using EMC storage. We have a lot of

other FCoE adapters booting from SAN, these servers are the

first ones with this Broadcom CNA.

Does somene has a similar setup?

Thank you,

best regards,

Hi Pinco,

Are you using Virtual connect in the interconnect bays in the enclosure & what is the storage that you are using ?

If it is virtual connect, have you added the FC Boot Parameters in the SAN Profile and check ?

Hello,

We understand your concerns, but has you have stated that the servers are out of warranty.

My first suggestion would be to contact the HP Sales rep to help you out with renewal or upgrade option.

And the NC542M is supported only till Windows 2008.

Click here for Quick Specs for NC542M.

Thanks,

Hello,

Yes, the NC542M adapter is supported upto Windows Server 2008 and hence, there are no drivers listed for Windows Server 2012 R2 on our HP Support and Driver page.

You can use these adapters on the compatible server, which is running with Windows Server 2008.

Re: Virtual Connect Command to Enable/Disable Downlink Port

I have been through different versions of this guide several times in the past, and again today, and I still don't see a command to disable a downlink port.  I see the uplink port commands, server bay commands, and server-port commands, but can't figure out a way to disable a downlink/server-port.  If I am missing something please provide an example.  Thanks...

Hi,

If you have one of the latest firmwares on VC, from VCM GUI you can disable a downlink port by modifying server profile and setting Port Speed type to "disable".

By CLI, it would be something like entering the server profile context and changing speed type to 'disable' on a specific downlink enumerated port.

The best way to test it is to disable one port from VCM and then run from CLI a "show config" command and then copying and editing the required server profile.

There is a setting called Smartlink in the VC Network settings that will make VC Mgr communicate an uplink failure (to your external switch) to the downlinks (to your ESXi blades) so that vSphere will know to use an alternate path.  Can you check if you have turned that on for the vMotion network that connects the enclosures?

This works in conjunction with 2 VC Networks in 2 uplink sets that are used for vMotion.  Each of the uplink set would connect to a different switch so that if the link or switch failed, that path failure would be communicated through Smartlink to the ESXi server and it would use the other path.

You might want to check the HP Virtual Connect FlexFabric Cookbook.

Hi,

I would suggest to open a formal support case with HP and provide the required logs (OneView dumps, AHS, VM-support,..) to fully review the systems side of the enviroment. There may be a patch/hotfix missing.

HP BL460c - lost network connection on FlexFabric - Bay1

Hi,

I have an enclosure with 16 HP BL460c G8 and 2xFlexFabric interconnect modules.

All servers have same profile and our uplink are configured as smart link.

There is a problem about bay4, any server has network connection problem on the bay.

I have changed enclosure with another new one but result is same as before.

Is there any problem about FlexFabric modules?

what is exactly the issue?

wich version using on FlexFabric?

Verrsion of OA?

is there an error message? the issue affected only Bay4?

on the second enclosure you have used the FlexFabric installed on the previous enclosure?

OA: 4.30

VCM: 4.10 (Two Flex-Fabric 10/24 - Interconnect Bay1 and Bay2)

I'm using old Flex-Fabric modules and just enclosure has been changed. I have no error message on OA and VCM, just I got the below errors on ESXi:

Uplink: 4737: requesting cap 0x0!

Tcpip_vmk: 808: Failed to set default gateway (51): network unreachable

NetDVS: 547: portAlias Is NULL

Just bay 4 is affected. I can't detect issue exactly. Because the server working fine on other bays. And other servers have same problem on Bay4. Of curse, the server has no problem on other Flex-Fabric module which is installed on interconnect Bay2. Is the Flex-Fabric module faulty?

Is the Flex-Fabric module faulty?

sure no that the Flex-Fabric module faulty, the issue affect only Bay 4 and errors that you have noted are on ESX, so by analyzing the VM-Support it can be helpfull to know more about the issue.

Virtual Connect - promiscuos mode question

Eriko had a customer question:

Does anyone know if Virtual connect supports Promiscuous mode settings? My customer wants to analyze TCPDump from CrentOS in a specific blade.

Please any reply on that will be very appreciated.

Reply from Robert:

VC would not affect promiscuous mode in an OS, nor would promiscuous mode in an OS affect VC.  I am not sure what the customer is really attempting.  VC does not filter any valid traffic.  VC does have the port monitor feature, which can be configured to mirror traffic from a downlink port(s) to a specified monitor uplink port.

Usually when I hear a request for ‘promiscuous’ mode it is because the customer is trying to send traffic from an external spanned port to a VC network.  They then associate a network adapter from a host to that VC network to analyze the spanned traffic.  They expect all of the spanned traffic to be forwarded.  But only broadcast, multicast and unicasts destined for the analyze host will be forwarded.  VC cannot span traffic from an uplink port to any other port within VC.

Pause Frame Flood problem question

$

Sukru was looking to solve a customer problem:

************

Hi All,

We have recently experienced a Pause Frame Flood problem. The VC modules have shut down all the downlink ports of a Blade server for preventing the Pause Frame Flood creates further problem in the VC modules. The support people have helped the customer to reset the server and the associated ports and the problem has been cleared now. As an ASM I need to explain the cause of the problem and at least give some recommendation to the customer to prevent the problem ocurring in the future.

As far as I understand such a problem may be caused by the following two reasons:

  1. There may be a bug in the NIC firmware and/or NIC driver of the Blade server causing the server sends excessive pause frames to the downlink ports of the VC.
  2. There is really a situtaion in the network that caused the Blade server sending pause frames frequently (or excessively).

We have confirmed that the NIC firmware/driver of the Balde Server is the latest:

Server: BL490c G6, NIC: Broadcom NetXtreme II BCM57711E/NC532i 10 Gig Eth.

OS: VMware ESXi 5.5

NIC Fw/Driver: 2.710.39.v55.2 / bc 6.2.28 phy baa0.105

Although it may still be a firmware/driver bug I cannot recommend an upgrade since it is already the latest.

I have thought that disabling the Ethernet Flow Control on the server may prevent such a problem in the future because the Pause Frames are sent when Ethernet Flow Control is enabled. On the other hand we have another more sophisticated  flow control mechanism on TCP level and disabling the flow control on Ethernet level may not create a problem.

I would like to ask you about your opinion on disabling Ethernet Flow Control on the server NIC for preventing such a problem causing the VC shutting down the server ports.

I appreciate your recppmmendations,

************

Input from Will:

************

You might want to check the customer’s firmware version for Virtual Connect.  I believe it was version 4.30 that addressed/resolved some pause frame issues.  If this is the case, verify they are on the latest ESXi 5.5 driver as well prior to updating.  Hope this helps.
