VM's with MS NLB (Network Load Balance) lost its connectivity

Hi All,

Our client has HP C7000 Enclosure with 6 x BL620c G7 Server Blade installed with VMware ESXi 5.5.
Interconnect module is 2 x HP VIRTUAL CONNECT FLEX-10/10D configured as Active/Active with 2 Shared Uplink Sets.
Other interconnect module is BROCADE 8/12C SAN SWITCH FOR BLADESYSTEM C-CLASS which is used as connectivity to HP SAN Switch and HP 3Par.

All VM's data are residing on the 3Par Storage.Virtual Connect Firmware is 4.10.
All VM's are working fine except for the vm's that has NLB (Network Load Balance).
VM's with NLB lost their network connectivity.

Maybe i miss something on the Flex10d settings.
Any idea on how to solve this issue?

Thanks

Re: Virtual Connect hostname

Greetings,

You may change the VC hostname from VCM(Vitual Connect Manager).

1. In VCM, select the hardware.

2. Click on Interconnect bays.

3. Select the Switch.

4. Click on Module Host Name.

You will have an option to reset the module name.

Check out the screen shot attached.

The options listed will change depending on the firmware versions installed.

Please give this a try and let me know the status.

I hope the info will help you.

Regards,

I did that but still (on the screen that I included) does not show the hostname.  I am assuming that hostname equals user assigned name.  If that is not the case, then how can I assign the user assigned name.  I need to capture a screen that includes the hostname and the IP.

Thanks!

Virtual Connect SUS Question

Hello All,

We are in the process of installing a new C7000 with TWO VCs in active/standby,  with 3 Blades and vmware hypervisor.

My quesitons is around the SUS setup, what is best practice around creating the Trunks, is it recommended to create TWO trunks (one for each VC) or can we create ONE trunk and assign the ports from both VCs?

Many Thanks

I am trying to get 4 FlexNic ports per FlexFabric module and the 4th port is showing up as "Administratively Hidden".  I am not using any of the first 3 for storage.  This is a brand new Gen9 blade with FF 20Gb 2-port 630FLB Adapters.

LOM1:1-d FLB1 Bay 1:d5:v4 HP FlexFabric 20Gb 2-port 630FLB Adapter

Any thoughts?  This is the first time I have used the 630FLB's, as the rest of my blades are Gen8's with 10Gb adapters.

...of course the same goes for the other FF module.

What does TAA stand for?

A question from Greg regarding TAA product:

*************

What does the TAA stand for

Does that just mean it is TAA compliant, if so what is the difference

HP Virtual Connect FlexFabric-20/40 F8 Module for c-Class BladeSystem

HP Virtual Connect FlexFabric-20/40 F8 Module for c-Class BladeSystem with TAA

Reply from Kant:

What is TAA Compliance?

TAA refers to the Trade Agreements Act (19 U.S.C. & 2501-2581), which is intended to foster fair and open international trade. TAA requires that the U.S. Government may acquire only “U.S. – made or designated country end products. This act requires that contractors must certify that each end product meets the applicable requirements. End products are ‘those articles, materials and supplies to be acquired for public use’.” This includes items which have been “substantially transformed” in the United States.

There is no difference in terms of parts or firmware, they are same. TAA mandates that the product has to “undergo significant transformation” like manufacturing or burning firmware in TAA designated country.

Virtual Connect & VC-FC Uplink Ports Connection question

$

Bohus had a question regarding what information he was seeing for VC-FC connections:

*************

Hi Team,

I have encountered this finding: when looking at VC “show all * ” output, in the section “FABRIC INFORMATION” there is for each Fabric additional External Uplink Ports Info, including VC-FC port Uplink WWN and “Connected To” WWN, which I would expect should be the WWN of neighbour SAN switch where this uplink is physically connected.

Example:

External Uplink Ports

===========================================================================

ID        Status  Speed  Port WWN                 Connected To

===========================================================================

enc0:4:1  OK      8Gb    20:11:00:11:0A:00:AD:59  10:00:00:05:33:EF:52:C6

When I compare wwn in the column “Connected To” with wwn of the switch where this uplink port is physically connected it does not match.

In the column “Connected To” I can see wwn of the Fabric Principal switch in that SAN Fabric.

Is it expected behaviour ?

Thanks for clarification.

************

Input from Vincent:

************

Yes, it is expected, extract from the VC User Guide:

Connected To:           WWN of the principal switch on the SAN fabric that this port is connected to on the other end

Maybe I am missing something but I do not see anything in the virtual connect user guide that discusses how to properly zone an external FC switch to ensure NPIV failover works correctly.

Re: Virtual Connect Brocade FC Zoning

Good question.

Never done this so far.

But the guide says

"Because the uplink ports for VC-FC and FlexFabric modules are N-ports, the modules can be connected to
any data center Brocade, McData, Cisco, or Qlogic FC switch that supports the NPIV protocol. When the
server blade HBAs or FlexFabric adapters log in to the fabric through the VC-FC or FlexFabric modules, the
adapter WWN is visible to the FC switch name server and can be managed as if it was connected directly.
"

So I assume you create zones based on the (virtual or real) WWN of the server adapters just like you would do without virtual connect.

Downgrading Virtual Connect v4.30 to v4.20

Nick was looking to downgrade to a previous version of Virtual Connect Manager:

************

Can anyone confirm that if we want to downgrade Virtual Connect from 4.30 to 4.20 we will need to delete the domain as per the link below (document dated 2011)?

http://h20564.www2.hp.com/hpsc/doc/public/display?docId=c02885443

And if I read this right we cannot backup the domain at 4.3 and restore it to 4.2?

************

From Carsten:

Hi Nick,

You can take a show config. There you have everything to recover the domain. But you have to set up a new Domain. With the config you can set it up.

And from Fred:

Hi Nick,

You’re correct that you can’t take a backup of a newer domain and restore it to an older version of VC (4.30->4.20 in your example).

Depending on your situation, you may be able to rollback from 4.30 to 4.20 without destroying the domain. The WP you linked to has a section describing the rollback process introduced in VC 3.70 and VCSU 1.7.0.

I was having this problem too and thanks to this I was able to fix it.

Now I have a couple of questions in a Boot from SAN scenario

  1. How can I make this work in a boot from SAN scenario ? I mean, how can I force FCoE hba scanning before setup scans the media ? Can I escape to a shell ALT-something before setup scans the media or do I have to customize the ISO with scripts ?
  2. If I were able to make the setup "see" the LUN in the SAN media, it will work after the reboot ?

Thanks.

Yes, I understand that typically one would just typicaly use the WWPN for FC switch zoneing. However I believe this requirement changes when one requires NPIV Failover. See the below guide from Emulux and VMware 4.1. I am looking for similar guidance regarding HP VC modules.

Virtual Connect Enterprise Manager (VCEM) and profile migration

$

John was having migrating issues to a new Central Management Server (CMS) with VCEM:

**************

Is there a documented process for VCEM Migration between CMS’s.

I have been attempting, unsuccessfully, Insight CMS Data Migrations  - consistently fails on HP SIM Component.  The VCEM part of the Migration works fine.

At this stage I am not interested in Devices and Event from the current CMS, but need to preserve the current VCEM state.  Can VCEM be migrated to a fresh CMS, with current VCM configuration?

**********

Input from Chris:

***********

The “migration” is quite simple, albeit manual process:

  1. Discover the enclosure in target VCEM CMS.
  2. Remove existing VCM Domain from VCEM Domain Group.
  3. Add VCM Domain to existing or new VCEM Domain Group.

This process does not require any downtime.

A cable support question from Mark:

Hi all

Does somebody know if we support 40Gb from the VC FlexFabric-20/40 F8 with our QSFP+ DAC Cable to the Cisco Nexus 5672?

or

Reply from Kant:

Mark:

It’s up to Cisco to support HP DAC cables, we only qualify at our end. Most likely they will be appear as 3rd party on Cisco side.

We do *enable* the following Cisco DAC cables with VC FlexFabric-20/40 F8 module:

QSFP-H40G-CU1M

QSFP-H40G-CU3M

QSFP-H40G-CU5M

QSFP-H40G-CU7M

Yes, Understood. But in order to get NPIV failover top work it is my understanding that the WWNN numbers aslo have to be added into the FC Switch zoning.

I found the belwo regarding emulux cards and VMware. I am looking for something similar for VC.
