MES with Flex-10 Base and Flex-10/10D imported would it be supported?

A question about Multi-Enclosure Stacking (MES) from Christy:

************

Hi All

I have a customer who wishes to incorporate a new chassis containing Flex-10/10D’s into an existing VC domain which contains Flex-10 modules

I have gone through various documents and have come across the point below on P.10 taken from the HP virtual connect for C class setup and installation guide ver 4.30

http://h20628.www2.hp.com/km-ext/kmcsdirect/emr_na-c04383984-3.pdf

All enclosures must have the same FC, FlexFabric, or Flex-10/10D module configuration.

For example, if bays 1 and 2 of the Primary Enclosure contain FlexFabric-20/40 F8 modules, then bays

1 and 2 of Remote Enclosures 1, 2, and 3 must also contain FlexFabric-20/40 F8 modules.

Q. Am I correct in the understanding that a MES must contain the same VC Eth, Flexfabric and FC interconnects across all the chassis within the MES?

Q. Are there any exceptions to this rule?

You are correct Christy, you can NOT stack 10D and 10 in a Multi Chassis Stack where the 10 and 10D are in different enclosures in the same location (Bay 1 and 2 for instance)

This is because the 10D is seen as a Hybrid Eth/FC module even though in the GUI it only says Eth.

Since we no longer sell the original Flex-10, any new chassis order has to match the existing chassis module for module.

The only exception being the dedicated FC modules can be mixed a little between 20 and 24 ports if I remember correctly.

So they either need to purchase Flex-10s from old stock somewhere, or migrate the other enclosures in the domain to 10D modules before adding in the new chassis.

Now, If they only need a few VLANs to be accessible between the enclosures @ 10Gb and those VLANs don’t need to exist anywhere outside the enclosures, there is a way to connect 2 different VC Domains together and have blades on both sides talk.  This is often good enough for vMotion or Oracle RAC as long as all the cluster members are in one of the 2 VC Domains.

But because we don’t allow VLANs to go in uplink A and then back out Uplink B, again, this VLAN/these VLANs would only exist inside each chassis.

All you need to do is wire them together and then configure a Network/SUS on each side to these interconnected ports.  And then change the Failover mode from Auto to Manual to each side knows which is the primary path.  If you want more than 1 VLAN to ride this connection, you make both sides an SUS instead of a simple vNetwork.  You will then have to figure our what VLAN Numbers to assign to each.  I recommend having the network team give you some high numbered ones (3001, 3002, 3003, etc) and mark them off as used in whatever tracking tool they use to make sure there is no future conflict.

Yes, it is. Make sure firmware is identical on all VC connect modules

Did you get this working? I'm having the same issue with some Flex10/10D modules showing up with failed validation using HP SPF modules!

I'm using HP JD118B modules which are LC SFP SX modules.  I'm going to be sad if I have to buy bladesystem specific SFP modules per the spec.

Hi Mike,

I've configured virtual connect in tunnel mode, I've done ping between two virtual machines from different blades and after this I've shutdown the interface in the switch and icmp traffic kept working. Therefore, traffic doesn't go outside.

Great.

Thanks, best regards.

Thanks for the comment.

That's interesting, although it's also a little suprising.  Everything I've seen says that in tunnel mode, virtual connect just passes it through and doesn't examing the packet.  If one VM is on VLAN1 and the other is on VLAN2, I woudn't think Virtual Connect would know to keep it local.  Maybe VC does examine it enough to see what VLAN's are on the port and keep them local.

Now that 4.3x has been released, does anyone know whether this fixed the issue with SSH that generated the "Unable to communicate with the Virtual Connect Manager. Please retry again later" message?  I don't see any reference to this problem in the documented "fixes" section of the 4.31 firmware updates.

Since upgrading several systems to 4.30, I have NOT seen the problem recur.  I was seeing it fairly regularly before upgrading.  So I believe that it is fixed.

The other issue with 4.3x is that there may be an expected long network outage to blade servers in the enclosure - several minutes possibly - as the firmware is installed. Is this true?  I don't have the luxury of a maintenance window where I work - it is 24x7x365 here.

Modify network connection for multiple server profiles

Hello,

I am using blades to run vSphere. Each of my blade servers have a profile with the same configuration for Flex10.

1. mngt

2. mngt

3. vMotion

4. vMotion

5. guest VLAN trunks

6. guest VLAN trunks

7. iSCSI

8. iSCSI

Is there a way to add a VLAN to NIC 5&6 on several profiles quickly? I am adding VLAN very often and this operation takes time and is error prone in the GUI.

The best solution would be to have a VLAN group that I could apply to some NIC and just being able to add a VLAN to the group so it applies to everything. I don't think this feature exists so I guess there is a quick way to do it using the command line?

Thanks

Hi

The Flex10/10D does not support the JD118B modules.  However, there is a list of supported transceivers under the related options tab here.  If you want to stick with a 1G connection, the HP BladeSystem c-Class Virtual Connect 1G SFP SX Transceiver is your best option.  Let me know if this answers your question and if there is anything else I can do for you.  Hope this helps!

I ended up buying some HP compatible SFP's for a decent price.. China origin I'm sure.

I don't get why the VC modules need a specific SFP modules versus any other edge networking device. These should be standards that everyone follows.

Is this impossible?

I can't be the only one who needs to do this...

Virtual Connect-FC upgrade question

Robert had a VC-FC module upgrade question:

                Hello All,

We would like to upgrade a 20ports VC-FC modul pair to a 24 ports VC-FC module pair in a c7000 frame.

Is it possible to do it on-line ? If yes, I would like to have a description about it.

No you cannot do it online. The process is described in the VC Setup and Installation Guide (http://h20564.www2.hp.com/portal/site/hpsc/public/kb/docDisplay/?docId=c04227183) page 48-49

incompatability between SFP+ (B-series) AJ716A (retired) and AJ716B (new version)?

All,

We have run into an issue with using the 8G SFP+, P/N AJ716B, into our SAN switches (HP Branded, Brocade 5100's). When connecting SAN fabric by using these SFP+'s in VC FC 8/24port modules, we don't get a connection. First I thought that maybe they have to match on both ports being used. Still no luck connecting.

When using the older AJ716A SFP+ in both ports, connection is made almost immediately.

We have just received new replacement equipment, part of that consists of more 8/24 port VC modules and AJ716B SFP+ for use with them.

They are both marked as (B-series SW) 8GB SFP+.....

Regards,

Louis

Dear team,

Is the Cisco QSFP-H40G-AOC15M supported for HP virtual connect 20/40 ? Which Cisco QSFP's are supported on the HP Virtual connect ?

Thanks

The only way i can think of is to do it through CLI, read the CLI command mentioned above and you will figure it out.

Virtual Connect FlexFabric-20/40 F8 module connection to Cisco Nexus

$

Alan had a VC FlexFabric cabling question:

*************

All,

I have a customer who is looking at purchasing the FlexFabric-20/40 F8 module as a new standard for their C7000’s going forward.

Unfortunately they are using Cisco Nexus as their next layer of networking.

What are the least painful options for 40GB connectivity between the Virtual Connect and Cisco Nexus?.

If we use the HP 40G DAC with the Cisco switch ,  I assume the Cisco switch will show the HP QSFP as being unsupported ?

Is there a Cisco DAC that would be supported on both sides?

If we go with an AOC I assume that will have the same issue from a support perspective?

Thanks for any Feedback or suggestions.

***********

Input from Dan:

*************

Alan, if you are using the Splitter DACs, then the 40Gb side needs to own the cable.

At least until the VC team comes out with guidance that the Cisco Splitter is supported on the FlexFabric 20/40’s 40Gb ports.

If you are using the 10Gb DACs, than the previously qualified Cisco DACs should all work.

There is extra logic that needs to happen when you use a 40Gb Splitter and so only whitelisted/qualified 40Gb Splitters may be used in a 20/40’s QSFP slot.
