Virtual Connect (VC) password reset options

A VC question from Steve:

*************

Quick question.

I am working on a C3000 with a single VC Flex-10 module.

The expected VC credentials are not working and physical access to the site is difficult.

I know that the OA can add users to an iLO but is there a similar way to add an admin user to the VC knowing the OA admin login? Otherwise, is there anyway remotely to get the default Administrator password as printed on the tag?

I suspect the answer is no to both, but just in case

************

Info from Dan:

Steve, you MIGHT be able to get the Default Pass internally with the VC module’s serial number.

I remember seeing a link somewhere that was like a “What to do if the serial number sticker is damaged and unreadable” in some VC document ages ago.

But I don’t know the exact procedure here.  Maybe one of the VC guys can point you in the right direction.

Reply from Mark:

No serial # link.

If the tag was missing/un-readable, you would have to put the module in Password override (1-On, 2-Off, 3-Off, 4-Off)

SSH/Login to OA (putty)

Connect Interconnect x x=Bay #) (example connect interconnect 1)

Reset VC module (from OA GUI or remove / reinsert)

The Factory default password will be printed  during the POST.

Mike had a customer question regarding adding vNets to server profiles:

********

I have a customer who has a continually changing environment and is looking for a quicker way to add vNets to the profiles. Can they script this via the OA? If so could how is this done. At the moment they are adding vNets by editing the profiles but they are not rebooting the blades

Reply from Fred:

This should be scriptable via the VCMCLI. http://h20564.www2.hp.com/portal/site/hpsc/public/kb/docDisplay/?docId=c04383986

IS the 516936-B21 in BL460 G5 compatible with FlexFabric 571956-B21 in Ethernet only

Need to buy some new BL460 G8,s and currently have some  G5,s and want to implement an HP Virtual Connect FlexFabric 10Gb/24-Port Module 571956-B21 and wanted to know if the FlexFabric interconnect will support the 10G card 9516936-B21.

Knowing that no FCOE signal will passthrough only Ethernet but that is what we want.

Is there a support matrix of Flex interconnect and HBA/Mezz cards ?

Thx

PS:my understanding is that they could both coexist but need confirmation of the 10GE support for G5.

HP Virtual connect login issues

$

Hi Guys,

I have a HP Virtual connect 10/10D module connected to C7000 enclosure.

It is connected to each of the 2 servers present in the enclosure as follows:

eth0 -- X1 (Bay1, Bay2) -- OAM switch                  ----------> Operation and Maintenance Network

eth1 -- X2 (Bay1, Bay2) -- Traffic SW1                  ----------> Traffic Network-1

eth2 -- X3 (Bay1, Bay2) -- Signalling SW1           ----------> Signalling Network -1

eth3 -- X4 (Bay1, Bay2) -- Signalling SW2           ----------> Signalling Network -2

eth4 -- X5 (Bay1, Bay2) -- Traffic SW2                  ----------> Traffoc Network-2

So I have two problems here:

1. Whenever I try to login to Stanby VC flex module, it always takes me to Active VC flex module (kind of a redirection)

2. I am doing a redundancy test on VC flex modules :

Case 1:

I pull out all cables from active VC flex (say vc flex 1) . I can see that traffic is being handled by passive VC flex (VCflex2)without any problem -- SUCCESS

Case 2:

In the same VC flex module (with cable disconnected) , I am switching off the VC module (using the enclosure interconnect virtual option). Now, I can see that my traffic stops being handled by the virtual connect module.

I raised a case with HP and they asked me to check Active -- Active scenario. The same thing holds for the Active -- Active scenario as well. Whenever I switch one HP VCflex off, the whole traffic stops being processed by the module.

Thanks in advance..

At the very outset it can neither be said that the HP 10 GBE DUAL PORT MEZZANINE NETWORK INTERFACE CARD is support or not.

The HP Virtual Connect FlexFabric 10Gb/24-Port Module’s QuickSpecs indicate that it is capable of carrying Ethernet signal and supports 10 Gb speeds. It is just that this configuration may not been have tested since the mezzanine card in question has been retired by the time the FlexFabric module was introduced. The module’s QuickSpecs does not include it as a supported adaptor. Click here for the module's QuickSpecs that also lists supported servers and network adaptors.

As it is not tested, it cannot be said with certainty if they both should work, however, having said that, they should work at 10Gb speed with no option for Flex capacity.

Hope this helps!

The rule to make FCoE FlexHBA WWN

Dae Yong had a question regarding FCoE World-Wide Names (WWN)

*************

Hello experts,

Simple question about VC Flexfabric.

When configured by vc-defined for ethernet and factory-defined for fc, what is the rule(combination) to make FCoE FlexHBA WWN?

It seems that vc-defined mac address is used to make it.

webpic345.png

************

Input from Fred:

Yes, VCM uses the VC-assigned MAC address to generated the WWN in this case. This behavior has its roots in older versions of OA which didn’t provide the actual hardware FCoE WWPNs to VCM.

Newer versions of OA now provide the actual hardware FCoE WWPNs and HP OneView will use them as part of its FCoE support.

Question back from Dae Yong:

Fred, thanks for good information.  I understand that FCoE WWN is generated by VCM (but, it’s NOT VC-defined), even though it’s defined as factory-default.

What is older version of OA?  ex. older than FW 4.00.  And IF update to newer version of OA, can FCoE WWPNs be changed to actual one without notice or warning?

Please help me more.

Reply from Fred:

This addressing algorithm will continue unchanged in VCM. Updating OA or VC will have no effect on existing addresses.

Reply from Robert:

The Catalyst 4500 spec includes 24 x SFP-10G-SR modules, so I am assuming that these are to be used on the Cisco side.  In that case, you would need to provide

HP BladeSystem c-Class 10Gb SFP+ SR Transceiver 455883-B21

The cables should be multimode and will support different lengths depending on the grade.  I would provision OM3 cables, for up to 300m distance.  If you are ordering them through HP the part codes would be

HP LC to LC Multi-mode OM3 2-Fiber 0.5m 1-Pack Fiber Optic Cable AJ833A

HP LC to LC Multi-mode OM3 2-Fiber 1.0m 1-Pack Fiber Optic Cable AJ834A

HP LC to LC Multi-mode OM3 2-Fiber 2.0m 1-Pack Fiber Optic Cable AJ835A

HP LC to LC Multi-mode OM3 2-Fiber 5.0m 1-Pack Fiber Optic Cable AJ836A

HP LC to LC Multi-mode OM3 2-Fiber 15.0m 1-Pack Fiber Optic Cable AJ837A

Hi there,

I'm implementing HP One View with a  new C7000 enclosure.
The topic is I want upgrade VC 4.30 to V4.31 but VCSU can't be used and the only way is do it thru HP One View ...

Does anyone has upgrade VC thru OneView without SPP boundle?

I Think the issue could be resolved adding vc431 to custom spp but I don't know how do it.
Is it enoughtadd firmware file to swpackages?

Thanks in advance.

VCSU is no longer available to upgrade VC firmware managed by OneView.

The document says

Firmware management
HP OneView makes it easy to manage firmware reliably and quickly across your data center. It replaces separate tools such as the Virtual Connect Support Utility (VCSU) for managing Virtual Connect firmware. The
HP OneView online help provides more information on firmware management using HP OneView

http://h20195.www2.hp.com/V2/getpdf.aspx/4AA5-0351ENW.pdf?ver=1.0

But it does not say VCSU is not working/supported, right?

However it points to the help regarding the update ...

Virtual Connect 10/24p nic speed visualization issue.

Hello all.

We just realized that from the Virtual Connect version 3.70 and newer versions, if we configure the different nics of one blade in the server profiles, ex. mgmt 100MB, vMotion 2GB, Multiple Vlans 4GB, when we go to the Vmware vCenter 5.1, in the setting menu for one host, the nics are only seen with a 10GB speed (the total LOM speed capacity), when with the previous versions, they were displayed properly. Do you know if there is a workaround for that? or Is it planned to fix it in future VC FW upgrades?. Thank you very much in advance.

For longer distances as stated above, it is recommended to use optical fibre cable for stacking.

For the following Virtual Connect modules this would be possible. Review Related Options > Cabling and Transceiver Options > "Ethernet Optical Transceivers" in their respective QuickSpecs for part number for transceivers:

HP Virtual Connect FlexFabric 10Gb/24-Port Module

http://www8.hp.com/h20195/v2/GetHTML.aspx?docname=c04154400

For HP 1/10Gb-F Virtual Connect Ethernet Module for c-Class BladeSystem, the connectivity is only upto a maximum of 300m. Refer it's QuickSpecs.

HP 1/10Gb Virtual Connect Ethernet Module for c-Class BladeSystem does not support stacking as this lacks the computing resources.

For shorter distances the following would be sufficient:

VC-Enet modules support 0.5 m to 7 m (1.64 ft to 23.00 ft) 10GBASE-CX4 stacking cables. The 1000BASE-T links can also be used as stacking links of up to 100 m (328 ft). Ports with different connector types can be aggregated if the link speed is the same. For example, CX4 and SFP+ ports both running at 10G can be aggregated to provide enhanced throughput for the stacking link.

FlexFabric modules support DAC cables. Uplink ports X1-X4 only support 0.5 m to 5m (1.64 ft to 16.40 ft) DAC stacking or uplink cables. Uplink Ports X5-X8 support 0.5 m to 7 m (1.64 ft to 23.00 ft) DAC stacking or uplink cables.

Changing Virtual Connect Domain name

A question from Kevin:

Hi,

Hopefully you can help me with a quick question please.

Can I change the VC domain name on a running enclosure without affecting the domain or having to re-apply profiles, reboot modules etc?

This is a standalone enclosure not managed by VCEM.

Is this dependant on the firmware version or applicable to all?

I will backup the config before and after.

Hi Kevin,

Yes, you can change the domain name w/o causing disruption.

Hi John,

You’ll want to look at Data Migration Tools (DMT) for this. Links to 7.1 doc: http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c03345473.pdf
